The Portuguese Government determined the measure of self-closure of Portuguese citizens in continental territory, taking into account the pandemic evolution of Covid-19 and the new cases of contagion in Portugal.

As announced this Thursday after the Council of Ministers, this measure will take effect from 00:00 on Sunday until the end of February 14.

Thus, the movement of Portuguese citizens outside the continental territory, carried out by any road – road, rail, air, river or sea is prohibited. However, according to a statement sent this Friday, there are some exceptions.

Strictly essential trips such as:
– Carrying out professional activities with an international dimension duly documented;

– Departure from the continent of Portuguese citizens residing in other countries;

– Exceptionally, for the purposes of family reunification of spouses or similar and relatives up to 1st degree in a straight line;

– Transportation of cargo or mail;

– For humanitarian purposes or medical emergencies;

– International transport of goods, cross-border or seasonal workers and emergency, relief and urgency vehicles;

– Travel to the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira

Border control
Regarding the control of the land and river borders with Spain, the Government also decided on a replacement similar to the one that occurred in March 2020.

Thus, the circulation between Portugal and Spain, in the authorized passages, is limited to the international transport of goods, cross-border and seasonal workers duly documented, emergency and emergency vehicles and emergency services. Cross-border railway circulation, except freight transport, as well as river transport between Portugal and Spain ”, reads the statement from the Internal Administration.

Exceptions:
– The entry into Portugal of national citizens and holders of residence permits in Portugal

– The departure of citizens residing in other countries
