Prime Minister António Costa said today that non-compliance with the curfew is not “a criminal matter”, but guaranteed that citizens who do not comply will be taken by the authorities to their homes.

“This measure simply establishes that the forces of authority can take people to their homes,” said António Costa, when asked about the criminal framework applicable in the event of non-compliance with the restrictions on movement in the 121 municipalities with the highest risk of contagion by covid-19.

The Government approved on Saturday, in the Council of Ministers, the curfew on weekdays, between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., and on weekends, between 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and 5:00 a.m. on Sunday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday and 5:00 am. Monday, within the scope of the state of emergency, which will run from Monday to the 23rd.

“The issue is not a criminal issue, the issue is not a police issue, it is a matter of individual responsibility. That obligation exists, that obligation must be fulfilled,” added the head of government, in the press conference that followed. to the extraordinary Council of Ministers held on Saturday, to implement the measures that will frame the state of emergency promulgated on Friday by the President of the Republic.

The measures were decided on the day that Portugal reached a new daily maximum number of covid-19 cases by counting another 6,640 infections in the last 24 hours, and recorded 56 deaths in the same period, according to the General Directorate of Health.

The state of emergency, which had never been applied in democracy in Portugal, was in force between March 19 and May 2, with two consecutive renewals, for a total of 45 days.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1.2 million deaths in more than 49.3 million cases of infection worldwide.

In Portugal, 2,848 people died from 173,540 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
