Last Saturday, October 10, the 31st Hispano-Portuguese Summit was held in Guarda. Portugal and Spain reached a Common Cross-Border Development Strategy that is fundamentally based on 5 axes of intervention.

One of the points of the document is related to infrastructures, physical and digital, territorial connectivity and also means of communication, Internet and mobile network.

The Common Cross-Border Development Strategy (ECDT) was presented last Saturday by the Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa, and by the Secretary of State for Interior Improvement, Isabel Ferreira, at the Luso-Spanish Summit in Guarda.

According to the information published on the Portugal portal, it is the first common development strategy between Portugal and Spain, contributing with concrete measures to place the Interior of Portugal at the center of the Iberian market.

The Common Cross-Border Development Strategy based on 5 lines of intervention:

  • 1) - Cross-border mobility and elimination of contextual costs
  • 2) - Infrastructures, physical and digital, and territorial connectivity: communication channels, Internet and mobile network.
  • 3) - Joint management of basic services in the areas of education, health, social services, civil protection
  • 4) - Economic development and territorial innovation: attraction of people, companies and new activities.
  • 5) - Environment, urban centers and culture

Internet "adequate" inside

Regarding point 2, the document shows that a document will be produced Digital Connectivity Plan, which provides adequate digital coverage - mobile and internet - in cross-border territory, and lays the foundations for the development of the 5G service.

The goal is to complete and expand digital broadband and telecommunications connectivity and the 5G pilot projects: 5G connectivity corridor on the Porto-Vigo, Évora-Mérida, Aveiro-Salamanca, Faro-Huelva highway.

This Strategy will directly serve more than 5 million people (Portuguese and Spanish). The Strategy covers 1,551 Portuguese parishes, an area that corresponds to 62% of the Portuguese territory and benefits more than 1,600,000 Portuguese. On the Spanish side there are 1,231 municipalities and 3.3 million inhabitants.
