The Braga Court marked for October 2 the beginning of the final allegations by the Public Ministry and the defense lawyers of ten defendants accused of having robbed the Santander bank, in dependence of the Central Avenue, in Braga, and several houses in the Miño region.

The hearings are expected to end this month, and the final ruling is expected to be published a month later.

On Friday, and in a new hearing after the judicial holidays – which now takes place at the Civic Center of Palmeira – the panel of judges entered a new stage, after, until July, they had tried to provide evidence on the assault on safes for clients in Santander bank. The ‘new phase’ addresses the robberies of ten houses in the Minho region.

Yesterday the origin of the stolen goods from homes that were owned by the father-in-law of one of the defendants was analyzed, where the GNR went to collect them during the criminal investigation.

Criminal association

The case involves PSP agent Carlos Alberto Alfaia, then in Ponte de Lima, who gave information, in exchange for money, about the houses that were going to be robbed.

The MP estimates that, from the bank alone, three defendants took 2.6 million in cash and 400 pieces from 52 safes. In total, four million. Among the injured, with stolen houses and stolen cars, are the businessman Domingos Névoa, the singer from the state of Rio de Janeiro, Delfim Júnior, and the doctor and former SC Braga athlete, Romeu Maia. The investigation was carried out by the GNR and the Porto Judicial Police.

The MP considers that the mentor of the “criminal association” is the accused Joaquim Marques Fernandes (from Priscos, Braga) who created the band in partnership with Vítor Manuel Martins Pereira (from Vila do Conde), Luís Miguel Martins de Almeida (from Braga ) and Rui Jorge Dias Fernandes (Braga).

The group also includes Paulo Sérgio Pereira (Vítor’s brother), from Famalicão, Mário Fernandes, from Braga, Cristiana Guimarães, from Braga, André Filipe Pereira, from Famalicão, and Manuel Oliveira Faria, from Braga.

It will have operated from 2017 to June 2018. It used sophisticated technological resources, such as telecommunications and alarm inhibitors, GPS, electronic car key cloners and instruments to neutralize watchdogs.
