Racing Point team sporting director Otmar Szafnauer admitted on Friday that he had received a warning from the International Automobile Federation about his obligations after the positive result of the driver Lance Stroll was not communicated.

The Canadian driver tested positive after the Formula 1 Eifel Grand Prix two weeks ago, in which he was replaced by German Nico Hulkenberg.

The FIA requires teams to report every positive test, but Racing Point has not done so for more than a week.

At a press conference held this afternoon at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, where the Portuguese GP will be held this weekend, Szafnauer guaranteed that the team will notify “immediately” if a positive case occurs again.

However, he assured that he received a “reminder” and “not a warning” from the FIA.

The McLaren director, whose team has had positive covid-19 cases this season, criticized Racing Point’s delay in communicating the positives from Stroll, saying “there appears to have been no immediate transparency.”

American Zack Brown also said Stroll should have been tested the same day he had symptoms.

Canadian Lance Stroll (Racing Point) announced Wednesday that he was infected. “I want everyone to know that I tested positive for covid-19 after the Eifel Grand Prix weekend [a 11 de outubro]”wrote the pilot, on the official Twitter account.

In the same post, Stroll, 21, says he tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 in pre-race tests at the Nurburgring.

“Saturday morning [10 de outubro], I started not feeling well and with a stomach ache. I followed the FIA protocol [Federação Internacional do Automóvel], I isolated myself and did not return to the paddock. I wasn’t ready to run so I drove home on Sunday morning. As I still did not feel well, I auditioned at night, “he explained.

This test confirmed the infection and Stroll claimed to have been in “self-isolation for 10 days”. “Fortunately, my symptoms were very mild. However, I took a test again on Monday of this week and the result was negative. I feel in very good shape and I can’t wait to go back to the team and race in Portugal,” he concluded . .

Stroll, who was replaced by German Nico Hulkenberg at the Eifel Grand Prix, is currently ninth in the drivers’ standings, with 57 points, less 173 than the leader, Britain’s Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).
