The Agrupaciones Tavira and Mangualde have already reopened, but there were many students who chose not to go to school. In Reguengos de Monsaraz, covid-19 suspended face-to-face classes.

The Dr. Jorge Augusto Correia School Group, in Tavira, and the Mangualde School Group reopened the doors this Monday to start the second period, but there were many students who did not attend the call. The explanation given by the directors is related to the fear expressed by parents that their children will be infected with covid-19, taking into account the significant increase in cases in both municipalities.

“Today we had less than 50% of students, from 1st to 12th year, because parents are afraid,” says the director of the Tavira School Group. The indication received from the Ministry of Education was to comply with the law and make absences. “I am advising the class directors to use common sense, but after the third offense it is more complicated,” he admits.

José Baía questions that face-to-face classes have resumed today, since the number of active cases in the region has doubled. “We held a meeting of the Civil Protection Commission and decided, unanimously, that students should continue taking distance classes. We don’t understand why they told us otherwise, on Friday night, ”he observes.

“We had no case of contagion at school, but what is at stake is outside, where the risk is very high,” he emphasizes. Advocate for classroom teaching, understands that in these circumstances, students should only have online classes. Above all, those in secondary school, because they are more autonomous.

Fear of contagion

The director of the Mangualde School Association, António Figueiredo, is also upset that face-to-face classes have resumed today, despite the fact that in the municipality there are 1,500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. “There were many missing students, in all classes, because parents are afraid of contagion,” he guarantees.

“It is reckless to resume activities. The group should be closed for at least one more week, to calm the cases”, defends António Figueiredo. On the other hand, it guarantees that they have all the conditions to ensure online education, since they have experienced teams and teachers, since they are a pole school for recurring distance education. However, he admits that 1st and 2nd cycle students continue to attend face-to-face classes, since there are no conditions to stay at home, since at least one of the parents would have to stay with them.

In the municipality of Mêda, the number of cases rose to 4,500 in 100,000 inhabitants, so the School Group will maintain online classes for 386 students from preschool to 12th grade, until January 15. “I think it was the best option we took, breaking the chains of contagion that affect us all,” says Luís Lopes, director. The disadvantaged students are being supported by the Agrupación, the Municipality or the Boards, so that they have access to computers and internet.

Infected wizards

Two infected operating assistants at the school headquarters of Grupo Escolar Reguengos de Monsaraz ordered the suspension of face-to-face classes. The director, António Ribeiro, explains that, this Monday, they had less than half of the operational assistants, because they were in prophylactic isolation, so the cleanliness of the spaces and the opening of the bar and the dining room could not be guaranteed.

António Ribeiro also reveals that at EB António Gião, 7th and 8th grade students will also have only distance classes, at least this week. “Some students tested positive for COVID-19, but the vast majority are at risk,” he says. Teachers are also being held. Classes are developed through synchronous and asynchronous sessions.
