Pinto da Costa believes that politicians are very present in football. According to the veteran director of the club, the absence of the public in the stadiums is “incompetence” of the Government and the General Directorate of Health. Regarding promiscuity in football, the FC Porto president reiterates: “I rarely see politicians in football, except in the presidential box at Estádio da Luz.” “In some games, it seems that there is a meeting of the Council of Ministers. If there is promiscuity, it is not precisely in football. Only there ”, says the leader whose list included Rui Moreira, mayor of Porto, as well as several deputies.
Pinto da Costa also comments on the statement of António Costa, who said that the support is not given as a governor, but as a citizen and benefactor. “I understand that he will, because it will give him popularity, knowing that Luís Filipe Vieira will obviously be re-elected, more than on his merits, because of the lack of quality of the opponents,” he says. “What I think is that, for Luís Filipe Vieira, it will not be beneficial to link his candidacy to the support of António Costa. And let me explain: António Costa runs the risk of going down in history as the man who asphyxiated football clubs and killed other sports ”.
The president of FC Porto finally refers to the taxes that are charged in our country, but specifically those that affect sporting events at a stage in which there is no income from ticket sales. “The Government does not lower, or partially suspend, the high taxes that fall on the clubs. Even now, Italy has cut taxes from 50% to 33%, precisely because Italian clubs face the same difficulty. For this reason, I repeat: I don’t know if, for the candidate, it would be good to have as a fan the person responsible for the destruction and bankruptcy of the Portuguese clubs ”.
