The maximum capacity allowed in the Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix, next weekend, should be reduced to 27,500 seats, the administrator of the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, Paulo Pinheiro, told “Lusa” this Sunday.

“We are still waiting for the final version of the DGS opinion [Direção-Geral da Saúde] but, in principle, the maximum limit should be 27,500 seats ”, revealed Paulo Pinheiro.

Initially, some 46,000 tickets went on sale, but in view of the evolution of the covid-19 pandemic in recent weeks, that number is expected to drop substantially.

“The document should reach us this Monday,” said the administrator of the Algarve racecourse. It is true that pedestrian entrances “will not be allowed”, so these seats will be distributed to other tiers.

However, Paulo Pinheiro revealed that there have been “several withdrawals” of supporters from abroad “who did not travel or are afraid” to see the race.

Therefore, “in principle, it will be able to accommodate” all the Portuguese fans who bought tickets, the official said.

On Friday, DGS had reported that it was reviewing the authorization for the public to attend sporting events, in particular in the Portuguese Grand Prix of Formula 1 and MotoGP, admitting its reduction.

Graça Freitas, general director of Health, had warned that “the situation is worrying”, which leads the health authority to act “with great caution”, adding that the presence of spectators at sports events “is being considered according to the area, with the reduction that will have to exist ”.

Portugal represents at least 2,181 deaths associated with covid-19 in 99,911 confirmed cases of infection, according to the latest bulletin from the Directorate General of Health (DGS).

The Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix will be the 12th race of the 2020 World Championship and will take place between Friday and Sunday, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão.
