Euthanasia. Parliament Approves Decriminalization of Physician-Assisted Death

Parliament approved this Friday the law that decriminalizes medically assisted death with 136 votes in favor, 78 against and four abstentions..

The Assembly of votes in favor of the Bloco de Esquerda, Liberal Initiative, PAN, ENP, deputies of the Socialist Party, 14 deputies of the Social Democratic Party and unregistered deputies Joacine Katar Moreira and Cristina Rodrigues. Two deputies and two deputies from the PSD abstained.

The CDS, Chega and the Communist Party voted against this law, as well as some deputies from the PS and PSD (that they were free to vote).

In the vote, the PSD, which was free to vote, was divided: 56 deputies voted against and 14 in favor, including the party’s leader, Rui Rio.

In the PS, a large majority voted in favor of the law, but nine deputies voted against it, among them Ascenso Simões, José Luís Carneiro, deputy general secretary.

Now that it has been approved, the law follows, by decision of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who can veto it, refer it to the Constitutional Court or promulgate it.

If the president enacts the law, Portugal will be the fourth country in Europe, and the seventh in the world, to decriminalize euthanasia.

The final general vote of the diploma resulted from the BE, PS, PAN, PEV and IL projects approved, in general, in February 2020, and was carried out after the discussion and voting in the specialty, in committee, and in january.

This law establishes, in particular, that people over 18 years of age, without mental problems or illnesses, in a situation of suffering and with an incurable disease, can only request medically assisted death, through a doctor.
