The European Council defined the testing and vaccination strategy for the member states in a meeting this Thursday afternoon, according to Prime Minister António Costa. The European bloc wants to avoid border closures as much as possible and will now complement PCR tests with rapid tests.

At the end of the meeting by videoconference between the leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union, António Costa reaffirmed the common objective “of not closing borders”, despite the “very significant rise seen in all countries” Covid-19. António Costa also addressed the vaccine distribution strategy.

“There are three contracts signed, four more under negotiation, each batch will be distributed equally to all countries,” explained the Prime Minister, adding that “each country will have to define its strategy of prioritizing how the vaccine will be applied in its population.” .

Regarding the measures to restrict circulation in the national territory, António Costa maintains that “both the basic Civil Protection law and the health law contain measures and a sufficiently solid legal framework to adopt the measures.”

Even so, the prime minister recognizes the “social fatigue” that the Portuguese and European populations are beginning to manifest, even citing a survey that reveals that people, at this time, have less perception of the danger that constitutes the disease caused by the new coronavirus than they had. in March and April. “Who can contain the pandemic is all of us individually”, summarized António Costa.
