The Portuguese Embassy in Italy withdrew a notice it had published on Monday advising Portuguese who are in the country on a “temporary stay, including tourists and students in exchange programs, to return quickly to Portugal.”

The warning referred to the “volatility of the current context” and the “risk of a sudden return to widespread confinement, border closures and suspension of flights between European countries.” The embassy warned of the risk that the Portuguese “find themselves stranded in Italian territory, with little possibility of benefiting from the support of local or national authorities.”

Questioned by the PUBLIC, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that “the consular communication published in the site of the Embassy in Rome does not foresee any national or European decision, having been withdrawn since then ”.

Italy has registered “a drastic increase in the number of infections” by the new coronavirus, which makes “the evolution of the pandemic in the country in the coming days unpredictable,” the warning also reads.

In total, Italy accounts for 37,479 deaths from covid-19 and 542,789 cases of infection, of which approximately 236,000 were active on Monday. There are 14,281 people hospitalized, 1,284 in intensive care units. The state of emergency was extended until January 31, 2021.

Since Monday, the country’s swimming pools, gyms, theaters and cinemas are closed, in order to combat the spread of the new coronavirus. Bars and restaurants must close at 6pm. The measures will be in effect until at least November 24.
