The Unique Challenges Neuralink Faces
Introduced in 2017, Neuralink has slowly shown what it will bring to market. This company aims to create a device that allows you to read the brain and give you the ability to communicate directly with computers.
Last year it revealed new features and showed the first glimpse of how it intends to overcome the challenge at hand. At the time it was just a concept, already mature and with everything to be the solution. There were some challenges to overcome and the maturing of some ideas.
Link v0.9 has arrived and everything to show
Now there is news and Elon Musk finally showed the first Neuralink device to read brain activity. Link V0.9 is fully functional and is in animal testing, namely pigs and some primates. This was seen in the presentation.
With a capacity of 1024 sensors, the Link will be placed invisibly in the skull where it is implanted. Elon Musk likened it to a Fitbit or other smart wearable device, managing to communicate directly and quickly within a 10-meter range. The Link must be charged every day, something that will be done by induction.
Elon Musk proved that it is still early, but there is already a lot
For now, and from what Elon Musk said, it is still not possible to fully read the brain and communicate with other machines. The link reads only sensor data and does not apply to areas that may be of interest in the near future.
In the presentation, and directly from the stage, Link could be seen working. Of the 3 pigs present, one still had the device applied and its nervous system reading was displayed in real time.
Human testing may begin soon
Human testing has yet to begin and Neuralink is awaiting the necessary clearances to do so. Elon Musk revealed that he hopes that even during 2020 he will be able to begin testing on some humans, complementing tests conducted on mice, pigs and primates.
The Link application and the many sensors were also the subject of this presentation. Elon Musk revealed the second version of the machine that will do it almost automatically. Implantation should take 1 hour and will not require general anesthesia. Patients can leave the same day.
Detect and read brain activity.
Before going ahead with plans to read minds and connect this new smart device to an information network, Neuralink wants to help patients with serious mental illness and physical problems. By reading and communicating with the brain, it will be possible to anticipate problems and act in advance.
This is an important step for the future of Neuralink and one that Elon Musk showed very clearly. Link v0.9 is the first functional proposal of this concept and it will evolve in the coming years. Nothing is promised, but everything reveals that the future of this company will be very interesting to follow.
