Chega sent a letter to the Minister of Internal Administration, Eduardo Cabrita, in which he argues that the Government cannot “tolerate provocations and counter-demonstrations whose sole objective is to try to generate confrontations and riots.” At stake is the “rally for freedom”, organized by a group of citizens of Évora, which calls for a demonstration in Praça do Giraldo, starting at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and this central point of the city of Alentejo is also the point of arrival. of the march “against the hypocrisy of racism to hide corruption” that the party headed by André Ventura will carry out starting at 7:30 p.m. the same day.

According to Chega’s letter to Eduardo Cabrita, the “organized, calm and peaceful demonstration, fully complying with the norms of social detachment of the General Directorate of Health and others dictated by common sense, in order to guarantee maximum security for all the participants “, previously communicated to the authorities by the party, whose second national convention will take place in Évora during the weekend, will face a counter-demonstration in the same city, with a route and close schedules,” in a position of clear provocation and above all of intolerance, which we have the duty to denounce and in no way can we accept ”.

“Social peace is one of the greatest and best characteristics of our country and we will do everything possible to maintain it,” defends the party led by André Ventura, appealing to the Ministry of Internal Administration not to tolerate an event that it considers organized with the intention to generate disorders. Something that Chega claims to have always demarcated, presenting as an example “the orderly manner” of the two demonstrations that he has promoted so far.

The first reaction of the discontent with the Chega demonstration was a public petition demanding the “prohibition of the march against racism in Évora and any other that followed”, addressed to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Ferro Rodrigues, and to the president of the Chamber of Évora, Carlos Pinto de Sá. Later, the “rally for freedom” was organized, with one of its promoters, Bento Anastásio, telling Radio Diana FM that “walking a band of fascists through the streets of the city of Évora is disrespectful and offensive. ”. The same member of the organization guaranteed that the concentration will be peaceful and in accordance with the rules of the General Directorate of Health and the state of contingency, considering that “the election of Mr. Ventura from the city of Évora was a provocation to the Democrats and democracy living in our city ”.
