The Companhia de Teatro de Braga will celebrate its 40th anniversary with Euripides’s “As Troianas”, in the Roman ruins of Cividade, an “honor and desire” to work on one of the city’s “hallmarks”.

The play that marks the four decades of the Companhia de Teatro de Braga (CTB) and the return of that Roman amphitheater to activity, announced today, constitute, according to the director of the company, Rui Madeira, “a milestone from the point of in view of the importance of recognizing in women, the great martyrs of wars and what happens in daily life ”.

The Greek tragedy will take place between September 25 and October 10, from Tuesday to Saturday, at 9:30 p.m., with a maximum capacity of 100 spectators, but the director of CTB has already left a challenge for the post-covid – 19.

“After the pandemic, we want to do an experiment. As are the ruins, doing a kind of classical theater festival, asking for help to create here a platform with other types of technical conditions, doing shows, “he said.

Regarding the current conditions of the Ruins of the Cividade, Rui Madeira explained that the status of the “sacred place” means that CTB needs the help of the residents of the area.

“We have phenomenal acoustics here, we are going to ask citizens to put white sheets on the walls so we can design parts of the piece. We will need the citizens of the parish and we will help to draw attention to these lines, and to design elements of a Roman theater ”, he appealed.

Rui Madeira recalled that Braga is a city “with a deep Roman identity, it has its own Roman festival”, and that “it was confusing” not to take advantage of that space, in the artistic context.

In the presentation of the project, the Councilor for Património, Miguel Bandeira, stressed that the realization of the show in that place can “expedite and demonstrate, before the entities, the importance of returning the use and activity to these places.

According to Miguel Bandeira, the Roman remains that proliferate in Braga must “be felt and internalized” by the city.

The Ruins of the Roman Theater of Cividade are assets classified as of national and international interest.
