The Transdev bus broke down at a level crossing with 57 children on board. The driver of the vehicle ran along the train track and managed to make the train stop earlier. Bus is being analyzed.

The bus that broke down on Wednesday at a level crossing that was closing due to the approach of a train, in Boidobra, Covilhã, belongs to Transdev, which won the concession of the transport service in the municipality, and is in the workshop . to be reviewed, found the JN. This Thursday morning, the company placed another driver and another bus on that route.

It was just after 8 am on Wednesday morning. The bus that made the Boidobra-Covilhã route, with 57 children in the field and five adults, returned to the county seat. At the Boidobra level crossing, the bus broke down in the middle of the line, at the moment the gates signal that the line is going to be banned for car and pedestrian traffic because a train is approaching.

“The driver put the engine back on, but the engine wouldn’t start. The panic began to scream, the screams finally ran over to try to get off the bus, while the sirens sounded ”, recalls Teresa Ramos, one of the occupants of the bus to participate in training in Covilhã.

“The driver yelled: Get the kids out! He pulled two out of the front seat and got off the bus running down the line,” he tells JN.

The adults clung to the younger ones to lead them outside. “I remember a mother with a two-year-old son was next to me [anos] and another of four. I took one of them and went down the stairs of the bus. “

Still in a state of shock, Teresa Ramos remembers seeing “a girl of about 10 years old, with her cell phone in her hand. She was so purple, she was in shock, not knowing what to do! I tried to calm her down.”

The driver “begins to run along the train track with his arms raised, to warn the driver that he has managed to stop the train and the bus that has remained intact.” At that time, according to the occupant, everyone was already out of the vehicle. “The worst was avoided, the collision, a possible misuse of the train and the children seeing and being picked up for the materials,” says Teresa Ramos.

“A man arrived who helped to remove the gate, who had entered inside the tire at the front of the bus and got on everyone else who surrounded the vehicle, who in the meantime caught him. We left 15 minutes later, on the same bus , by Covilhã, in silence. The driver was completely scared, he could even see his state … driving slowly. “

Upon arrival at the destination, Isabel Ramos telephoned the primary school of Grupo Escolar Pêro da Covilhã “to alert the teachers to pay more attention to the children who were on the bus.”

Alexandre Rato, the bus driver, already labeled a “hero without a cape”, refuses to comment.

Meanwhile, the Câmara da Covilhã will “pressure” the Portuguese infrastructures to repress, “as promised, this level crossing.”

“We know that there are difficulties because there are houses in the area. However, there must be a solution because situations like these cannot happen again,” says Vítor Pereira, who has not yet spoken with the driver. I want to personally thank you for the great achievement ”.
