In December five years ago, João Dias, 18, and two other young Spaniards were picked up by a train in Águas Santas, Maia, while they were trying to paint a composition of the transport. Renato Oliveira, a friend of the young cartoonist, wants to pay homage to him with a documentary and show the heritage that Nord (the name that João Dias adopted as “writer”) left in the graffiti culture.
For the documentary to come to light, or in this case, a canvas, Renato Oliveira needs to raise 850 euros, an amount that he tries to obtain through a crowdfunding platform. “This movement is a disorganized and non-profit movement, whose main objective is to honor NORD and keep its free spirit alive,” he explains on the PPL platform page. The teaser has already been unveiled.
The documentary “Nord Vive” does not remain, however, in the life of João Dias, who began “at the end of 2013 to paint in abandoned houses”. The project wants to go further: it contains interviews with family and friends from Nord, but it will also explore the art of graffiti in Portugal. After the death of the young man, who lived in Senhora da Hora, in Matosinhos, several artists paid tribute to him, such as Alexandre Farto, known as Vhils. Five years later, the Nord name is still signed on many walls.
Renato Oliveira, also involved in the art of graffiti, is the producer of the documentary. The 23-year-old from Leça da Palmeira gave João Dias the name Nord. “J: Eyez or North? R: North? What about Nord? J: You’re great, I’ll see that!”, Oliveira remembers. Tomás Bandeira, who will be in charge of making and editing the film, joins the conception of the documentary.
Until October 30, the goal is to raise 850 euros. If not, Renato Oliveira agrees to return the money. The public can contribute any amount, and depending on the amount, it is possible to receive a “reward” such as a t-shirt, a poster or even a DVD copy of the future documentary.
Part of the project is already finished: some interviews have already been filmed. A part of the amount raised, in addition to finishing the making of the documentary, will help to make a mural in honor of João Dias in Matosinhos, “on a fresh wall” and with “invited artists”.
Five years ago, Nord and two other Spanish graffiti artists lost their lives in Maia. In 2020, many want them to continue living in the walls. At that time, in JN, Mr. Dheo mourned the death of his colleagues and said: “15 years ago this young man was me. Today I am lucky to be living that dream.”
