Nine counties on the mainland went almost eight months with almost no confirmed cases

Almost eight months after the start of the covid-19 pandemic in Portugal, nine municipalities on the continent, located mainly in Alentejo, registered none or even three confirmed cases accumulated until Monday, according to data from the General Directorate of Health (DGS) .

Penedono, Mêda, Penalva do Castelo, Castanheira de Pera, Castelo de Vide, Fronteira, Monforte, Alvito and Barrancos are the counties of the Portuguese peninsula that counted between zero and three confirmed cases of covid-19 accumulated until 12:00 on Monday . Monday, according to the cartographic analysis of the current situation in Portugal, with data from DGS.

“As it is written in the epidemiological bulletin, when the confirmed cases are less than three, for confidentiality reasons, the data is not presented”, said the DGS, explaining that “the orientation is to disclose only the municipalities with more than three cases , based on respect for statistical confidentiality “.

From Monday to today, according to data from the DGS and the municipalities, there have been four continental regions with no or less than three confirmed cases, namely Alvito, Fronteira, Barrancos and Castanheira de Pera.

In addition to the municipalities of the continent, there are six counties in the Autonomous Region of the Azores without cases or up to three accumulated confirmed cases, according to the most recent data from the DGS on the current situation map in Portugal, with data at 12 noon Monday. which reveal that they are Lajes das Flores, Santa Cruz das Flores, Corvo, Lajes do Pico, Vila Franca do Campo and Vila do Porto.

From the start of the pandemic in Portugal until Monday, of the 308 Portuguese municipalities, 15 counties had between zero and three confirmed accumulated new coronavirus cases.

To date, Alvito, with about 2,400 inhabitants, is the only one of the 14 municipalities in the Beja district that does not have any confirmed cases of infection by the covid-19 virus.

“The great merit, if there is merit, belongs to the population, who understood from the beginning the seriousness of the situation, have been following, more or less strictly, the rules [das autoridades] and has taken the fundamental care so that the county continues in this situation of virginity in matters [de casos] of covid-19, “the mayor of Alvito, António Valério, told Lusa today.

According to the mayor, the behavior of the population “may be a decisive factor”, but “there are other factors with weight”, such as that the municipality is “very small”, is “isolated and away from the main traffic routes” and has “few inhabitants”. and an aging population, which on the one hand is a risk, but on the other hand [os idosos] they have more concerns and cares. “

Measures adopted by the municipality, such as the suspension of events to promote social gatherings and the contracting of services to the Academic Center for Research and Biomedical Training of the Algarve to accompany the schools, and the support of the Republican National Guard (GNR), which ” it has always been present with a very pedagogical attitude “, are other of the” weight factors “pointed out by António Valério.

Currently, Alvito, without any case, Barrancos and Almodôvar, which, respectively, have already registered two and 14 cases of infected, but which have already recovered, are the three municipalities of the Beja district without any case of active contagion.

With almost 1,800 inhabitants, Barrancos has managed to maintain a low number of cases, despite having a border with Spain and having as a “neighbor” the municipality of Moura, the second most affected by the pandemic in the district of Beja with 167 confirmed infections.

Few inhabitants, the “great acceptance” by the population of the covid-19 prevention norms and the measures adopted by local authorities can “help explain” the low number of infections in the municipality, the Mayor of Barrancos. João Serranito Nunes.

Early detection and isolation of the only two confirmed cases and rapid direct contact testing also “avoided” potential chains of contagion and more cases, he said.

Also “fear” of the population and the temporary closure of the border point between Barrancos and Encinasola, “despite having complicated the life” of border workers and businessmen, had “a positive effect: that of having stopped the usual corruption between both sides. the border, “said João Serranito Nunes.

The mayor stressed that there is only one case of contagion registered in the neighboring Spanish town of Encinasola and most border workers in Barrancos work in the fields and, therefore, have less risk of contagion in Spain.

In the interior of the Leiria district, the municipality of Castanheira de Pera registered only two cases of covid-19, one of which is still active, from March to Thursday, which provokes the applause of the Chamber for the work of Civil Protection, GNR, health and social institutions, as well as the “great effort and exemplary behavior” of Santa Casa da Misericórdia and the Cooperative of Education and Rehabilitation of Disabled Citizens of Castanheira de Pera (Cercicaper).

In these four levels of intervention, “there has been a lot of proximity” on the part of the entities, the mayor of Castanheira de Pera, Alda Carvalho, told Lusa, referring that “neither of the two infections” confirmed locally since the pandemic hit Portugal. At the beginning of March, it was seen among users, workers or directors of social solidarity institutions, he said.

Despite registering more than three confirmed cases, the municipality of Mêda, in the Guarda district, continues to stand out for the low number of people infected by the new coronavirus, accounting for a cumulative of 12 confirmed cases and seven active, since the beginning. pandemic and until Thursday.

Speaking to Lusa, the mayor, Anselmo Sousa, praised that in the area of the municipality of Mêda there is “greater care” to avoid contagion and “a joint effort by all agencies, namely, the GNR City Council.” and Civil Protection, including awareness raising ”.

“People have been careful and it has worked. And perhaps, also, a bit of luck,” concluded the mayor of Mêda.

In Portugal, 2,468 people died from 137,272 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent DGS bulletin.

Country also registers a new record of cases with 4,656 infected in the last 24 hours
