It is a cyclical phenomenon and invariably registered on Mondays and Tuesdays: the number of new infections with the new coronavirus has decreased considerably, for the next day to start climbing again, and in the last weeks more sharply than we get used to during the summer months.

This Tuesday was no exception, with the daily bulletin of the Directorate General of Health (DGS) revealing a drop of 30.7% in relation to the new infections registered the previous day (that, yes, atypically above the average of Monday). fairs). In total, Portugal has another 425 infected by the new coronavirus this Tuesday, the lowest value since last Tuesday, in which 388 new cases were registered (the previous Monday it had been 249, down from only September 1, with 231) .

The number of tests carried out helps to explain the weekly variations: while last Friday, September 11, 21,996 harvests were carried out in laboratories and hospitals throughout the country for the Covid-19 test, on Saturday that figure dropped to 16,050, so that on Sunday it falls even more, to 12,092.

More than daily ups and downs, it will be worth looking more the weekly average number of new infections. If so, between the last Wednesday, September 9 and the current day, 4,126 infected people were registered, that is, 589 for each day.

What you really need to know about the coronavirus in Portugal

Since the pandemic began in March, 65,021 people have tested positive for SARS-Cov-2. There are currently 18,784 active cases in the country, 244 more than on Monday, and 44,362 recovered, 177 more.

In the last 24 hours, 4 more people died in Portugal, victims of complications caused by the new coronavirus -one in the Algarve, another in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (LVT) region and the remaining two in the North- which means that the total number of deaths from the pandemic is already 1,875.

More or less fatal to both men and women (945 of them and 930 of them have already died), Covid-19 has been shown to be particularly lethal for the elderly over 80. This Tuesday there were 1,248 fatalities older than that age; 377 were in their seventies and 163 were in their sixties. Between the ages of zero and 59, 58 people died across the country, due to Covid-19, in the last six and a half months.

Although Madeira is the only territory that, to date, has not registered any deaths, the North remains the region most affected by the new coronavirus, with a total of 859 deaths. In LVT, 706 people have already died, in Centro 254, Alentejo 22, Algarve 19 and Azores 15.

In total, at midnight on Tuesday there were 478 people hospitalized throughout the country, one more than this Monday.

After the sharp rebound last Saturday, in which the number of hospitalized patients went from 404 to 438 in just 24 hours, the number of hospitalizations remains stable in Portugal, having even decreased very slightly in the cases of patients hospitalized in units intensive care – 59, two less than this Monday.

After a few days in which attention turned, as in the confinement phase, towards the North, it was in the LVT region where more than half of the 425 new infected people in the last 24 hours were re-registered – 53, 4%.

Furthermore, 27.5% of the cases correspond to tests carried out in the North and 12% were registered in the Center. The Algarve, with 15 new infections, has 3.5% of new cases; Alentejo, with 14, has 3.3%.

The Azores registered a new case, Madeira, which this Monday had 8 new cases, did not have any new positive test.
