The General Directorate of Health (DGS) warned, this Monday, the Portuguese population of the presence of a mass on the Continent and explains how to proceed in this situation.

“There is a situation of poor air quality on the continent, due to the intrusion of an air mass from the deserts of North Africa. It is expected to continue today and tomorrow ”, wrote DGS on Twitter, leaving a link to the website of the health authorities where some recommendations are mentioned.

On the website, DGS suggests that “the general population should avoid prolonged exertion, limit outdoor physical activity, and avoid exposure to risk factors, such as tobacco smoke and contact with irritants.” It is proposed that children, the elderly, patients with chronic respiratory problems, especially those with asthma and cardiovascular disease, remain “inside buildings and, if possible, with the windows closed”.

“This pollutant has effects on human health, especially in the most sensitive population, that is, children and the elderly, whose health care must be redoubled when these situations occur”, highlights the DGS.

The health authorities also explain that “this situation is due to the intrusion of an air mass from the deserts of North Africa, and its effect may be weakened with the occurrence of the rain forecast for some areas of the country, thus reducing the concentrations of particles in the air ”.
