The General Directorate of Health (DGS) advises against the use of playgrounds during the pandemic crisis. At the press conference on Wednesday, the general director of Health, Graça Freitas, assures that these spaces can carry “risks” more infection, highlighting the poor hygiene of some equipment.

“Playgrounds are recreational equipment, but they have risks because they can cause a large crowd of children without rules of any kind. Some will be open, but we still do not advise its use. The equipment is not always properly sanitized between uses and the control of the mobility of children within the park is not guaranteed. Most children do not wear a mask and this use is not recommended abroad. We continue to believe that the playground still has an added risk that is not worth it. Children can have fun outdoors, safely, in other spaces ”, said Graça Freitas.

Regarding the return to schools, the Director General of Health guaranteed that the situation is “under control”, specifying specifically how many outbreaks have been detected by the authorities since the beginning of this academic year.

“What we have verified is that the situation is under control and, sometimes, the school has only one case, which can make some contacts go home. The decision [de quem vai para casa] it is about the school organization itself. So far we have identified 23 outbreaks in schools nationwide, seven of which are in the North, three in the Center, 12 in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, there are none in the Alentejo and there is one in the Algarve. These outbreaks have 136 positive cases, among students and staff, both teachers and non-teachers. From these cases, many people will be under surveillance in their homes ”, concluded the Director General of Health.

In the last 24 hours, 32 people were hospitalized for covid-19 in Portugal, causing the total number of hospitalizations to rise to a value that had not been recorded since May. In total, there are 764 people hospitalized, 106 of them in intensive care units (ICU); Almost five months ago, on May 11, there were 805 (and 112 in ICU).

Covid-19 was responsible for eight more deaths and 944 cases of infection in Portugal in the last 24 hours, according to daily data from DGS. In total, the disease has killed 2,040 victims and infected 81,256 people since March.
