The deputy chief of the Maritime Police (PM), who works in Quarteira, arrived at the fishing port of the Algarve city around 4:00 am on Tuesday, with another man, who introduced him to the security of the place as a co-worker . He also explained that they were going to carry out work with fishing nets, for which he asked the same security guard that the video surveillance cameras be diverted from a specific area of the port.

A short time later, two other men began unloading suspicious bales from a boat, which was docked precisely in the area from which the cameras had been diverted to pickup trucks. Only, despite the absence of video surveillance, they were seen by fishermen, who warned the security guard. This alerted the PM, who upon arriving at the scene at 4:30 am found and detained the two Spaniards, who had been unloading the hashish bales and had been detained by the fishermen and the security guard.

However, two vehicles with occupants who would also be involved in the hashish trafficking operation, including the one followed by the deputy head of the PM, left the port. They continued to be persecuted, with the support of GNR, through the streets of Quarteira, but without success.

Later the Judicial Police were called and it was the inspectors of this force to whom the port security related the episode with the deputy chief of the PM. The man, decorated and considered one of the most active in operational activity, was formally arrested Tuesday afternoon by the PJ. Present in court, he was in preventive prison, like the two Spaniards who unloaded the drug.

In total, the authorities seized 133 bales, containing about 4.5 tons of hashish. It is possible that some drugs were taken in vehicles that left the port, when PM arrived. The investigation continues to try to identify the others involved in the discharge who fled.

To Expresso, Rocha Pacheco, commander of the Maritime Authority in the Algarve, confirmed the arrest of “two foreigners”, who unloaded the bales of hashish. In addition to the drug, the boat carrying the narcotic was also seized. It also admits the “arrest, in recent days, of a deputy chief of the Local Command of Faro del PM, to serve in Quarteira.” But he refuses to link the two situations, “because the investigation of the drug spill was left to the PJ.” The PJ, at a press conference this Thursday, announced three arrests related to the case, without confirming that one of the detainees belongs to the PM. António Madureira, head of the South Directorate of the PJ, preferred to highlight “the excellent cooperation” of all the security forces in this investigation.
