João Gomes Cravinho’s decision on the “Directive for the use of non-discriminatory language” was made public by AOFA – Association of Officers of the Armed Forces, which published the minister’s order on its Facebook page.
The document is signed by João Gomes Cravinho and was sent to the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as to all the organs and agencies of the National Defense.
The order reads: “I found out about the dispatch by the General Secretariat of Trades (…) with the title ‘Directive on the Use of Non-Discriminatory Language’, addressed to EMGFA, Ramos and the central services of the Ministry (…). Due to lack of superior approval, and because it is a working document that does not show an adequate state of maturity, the aforementioned letters should be considered canceled ”.
It is a proposal for a directive prepared by the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense with guidelines for a “non-discriminatory language” and more equal in the Armed Forces, in which it is proposed, for example, that instead of writing “the coordinator ”,“ coordination ”should be used instead of“ the participants ”,“ who participates ”, or even“ welcome ”should be replaced by“ welcome to everyone ”.
This document caused discomfort among the military and aroused indignation and criticism in the sector, and the Defense Minister then downplayed the impact of the directive, considering other measures underway as “more relevant.”

Officials of the Armed Forces justify that the document was humiliating in the sense that it allowed the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) to give orders to the military leaders, which was misadjusted because it was not applicable to the Armed Forces as a “ example of gender equality and equality ”,“ Inopportune ”because it overlaps with“ dozens of serious problems that the MDN does nothing to solve in the Armed Forces ”.
