The unregistered parliamentarian, Cristina Rodrigues, presented a bill on Thursday that aims to change the Labor Code with regard to companion animals.

The lawyer and former deputy of the Party of Animals and Nature (PAN) believes that it is necessary to extend the right to leave due to the death of pets, as a consequence of the suffering that this loss causes to the owners who, during their lives, were theirs . caregivers, remembering that “pets are getting closer, many of them living in our homes with our families.”

Learn about the proposal to change the legislation
“Portuguese law does not recognize the pet owner the right to miss work due to his death. However, we know that the perception that society has of animals today is quite different than it was in the past. The company is getting closer and closer, many of them living in our homes with our families.

According to the GfK Track.2Pets study, in 2015 there were 6.3 million pets in Portuguese households, which means that more than half of Portuguese families own an animal. This consultancy, which between 2011 and 2018 analyzed the evolution of Portuguese behavior in this area, argues that the increase in households with pets is due to the change of family nuclei and the growing notion that they contribute to the good – physical and psychological health of the Headlines.

In addition, GFK points out, “the treatment of pets has never been more humanized than it is today. People increasingly attribute feelings and characteristics to human beings.” The study even reveals that, in 2016, more than half of families with dogs considered the animal “a member of the family” and almost a third saw the dog as “a friend.”

It is also important to mention the Master’s Thesis in Sociology and Social Dynamics, on the topic “The Phenomenon of Pets in the Reality of Lisbon”, by Vanessa Martins, in which 12 of the 13 interviewees mentioned the animal as part of the family , situations in which the interviewees identified the animal with a friend and companion and even as a son.

As the Relação do Porto Judgment of 02/19/2015 says, “Respect for animal rights is a fact of civilization acquired in modern European societies. The acceptance that animals are living beings that need attention, care and protection of man, and not things that man can dispose of as he likes, that is, subjecting them to mistreatment or cruel acts, has implied the recognition of the advantages of the relationship between man and companion animals, both for man in regard to animals, and it underlies the need for a minimum of legal protection of this relationship, such as criminal penalties for mistreatment of animals and administrative control of the conditions in which these animals are kept.

As a result, the relationship between man and his pets now has legal significance that cannot be ignored. “

In this Judgment it was also considered that the suffering and disgust caused by the loss of a pet that has been loved, that I can share in daily life, that it feeds and cares for, that it takes to the vet when it is sick or he needs medical attention, ”it reads on Parliament’s website.
