In the week of September 14 to 20, Portugal registered 4,604 new cases of infection by the coronavirus responsible for covid-19, which represents an increase of 12.6% compared to 4,089 the previous week, according to the data released this Monday 21. September, by the Directorate General of Health (DGS).

The geographical distribution data at the municipal level, which are reported by the DGS on Mondays, show that there were 75 municipalities in the country with at least 10 additional cases in the week ending Sunday, 13 more than the 62 municipalities that reached this bar the week before.

Within this lot, 17 municipalities saw the number of infections increase by 50 or more. And in eight the new cases exceeded a hundred. The largest increases in absolute terms corresponded to the two most populated municipalities: Lisbon and Sintra, with 448 and 352 new infections, respectively. The capital has exceeded six thousand cases since the start of the pandemic, while Sintra already has more than five thousand infections.

With more than one hundred new cases in a week, the municipalities of Amadora (173), Cascais (156), Loures (154), Guimarães (142), Odivelas (131) and Oeiras (122) appear. Therefore, only the place of birth is not part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML).

The situation continues to be worrying in the neighboring towns of Vila do Conde and Póvoa do Varzim, which registered 76 and 68 new cases, respectively. Outbreaks in the fishing community of Vila Condense remain uncontrolled.

Also noteworthy are the 31 cases registered in Ourique, a municipality that until now was not included in the DGS bulletin, so it had two or fewer infections, as well as the 36 new infections in Vimioso, a municipality of just four thousand inhabitants and that It became the municipality with the highest incidence of the disease, with almost 2% of the population infected.

Lisbon Metropolitan Area with almost two thousand new cases

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) saw the number of new cases increase in 1986, continuing the accelerated trend of the previous three weeks, in which the 18 municipalities with AML had registered 831, 1,008 and 1,508 new infections. Since the beginning of the pandemic, AML has totaled 29,241 cases.

This week, seven AML counties, including the five that had parishes in a state of calamity at the end of July, are among the newest cases counted.

By concentrating 11 of the 24 municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, AML has the four municipalities with the highest number of cases: Lisbon (6,050), Sintra (5,102), Amadora (2,914) and Loures (2,913). And, eight of the 10 municipalities with the most infections have been AML since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP) also increased in new cases, with 597 additional infections. In the previous weeks, AMP had registered 218, 363, 395 and 468 new cases.

The biggest increases this week within the AMP corresponded to Vila Nova de Gaia (92), Vila do Conde (76), Porto (71) and Póvoa de Varzim (68). The Porto Metropolitan Area has totaled 12,735 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

Only 30 counties have no covid cases.

The number of municipalities with at least three cases – the DGS does not identify municipalities with two or fewer confirmed cases – amounts to 278, with the inclusion of Ourique, Mêda and Aguiar da Beira, which corresponds to 90.3% of the 308 municipalities From Portugal. In other words, only 30 municipalities have two or fewer cases of coronavirus infection.

With at least one hundred cases, there are 86, five more than a week ago. The counties of Albergaria-a-Velha, Baião, Cartaxo, Ourém and Santiago do Cacém now represent more than 100 infections.

There are 17 counties with more than 1,000 infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

Vila do Conde exceeds 1% of infected and Vimioso has almost 2%

The number of municipalities where more than 1% of the population is or has been infected by the new coronavirus since the start of the pandemic has increased to 15, with the inclusion of Vila do Conde.

The Alentejo municipalities of Reguengos de Monsaraz (1.74%) and Mora (1.55%) continue to be those with the highest number of cases in relation to the population.

In the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML), where the incidence in the 18 municipalities already exceeds 1%, there are six municipalities with more than 1% of infected inhabitants: Amadora (1.58%), Loures (1.36%) , Sintra (1.3%), Odivelas (1.29%), Lisbon (1.19%) and Vila Franca de Xira (1.09%).

In Ovar, 1.34% are residents who contracted the virus. Lousada (1.09%), Arouca (1.14%), Vila do Conde (1.05%), Sernancelhe (1.59%), Azambuja (1.11%) also have one in every 100 inhabitants. it tested positive.
