There are at least 72 municipalities with “very high risk” of infection by the new coronavirus in Portugal. Most of these counties are in the north of the country.
The news is advanced this Saturday by the weekly Expresso, which made calculations from the bulletins of the General Health Directorate (DGS) and population estimates from the INE.
In addition to Paços de Ferreira, Lousada me Felgueiras, where the Government decreed stricter measures, namely the duty to stay at home, the municipalities of Walls, Penafiel, Braganza, Porto me Lisbon. In these municipalities, more than 120 new cases were registered for every 100,000 inhabitants in two weeks between October 5 and 9.

Experts from the DGS and the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) developed risk maps by municipality, where three factors are taken into account, Manuel Carmo Gomes, professor of Epidemiology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon: the incidence (new cases per 100,000 inhabitants), the “trend of evolution of the cases” and “the nature of the outbreaks”.
The Government, however, decided not to release these maps because they could accentuate inequalities, but guarantees that it is using them to decide what measures to take. Even this Friday, the Health Minister considered that “mapping an area with a color typology can have some negative effect.” “We use maps to help us take action, but we have to read them carefully. We have been using this instrument for a long time, ”said Marta Temido.
