The 14-day incidence data from this Monday’s bulletin from the Directorate General of Health (DGS) indicates that there are 219 municipalities in Portugal at the “extremely high risk” level, 15 less than in the previous update, one that reflects reduction of the number of cases that were noticed in the last week. Even so, they correspond to 71% of the country’s municipalities.
In the 219 municipalities at the highest level, 208 were already there the previous week, with 11 municipalities that have risen to the last risk level. In the opposite direction, 26 municipalities followed.
The attenuation of contagions is the dominant theme in the country: of the 308 municipalities, 197 saw a decrease in the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants between January 20 and February 2, equivalent to 64%. This means that the average incidence for each municipality has decreased from 1,551 new cases last week to 1,441 in the most recent update (minus 110). This average has been increasing since the 14-day data from December 7 to 20.
There was an increase in incidence at 14 days in 104 municipalities and the indicator remained altered in another seven, among which is Velas, on the Azorean island of São Jorge, which has registered a zero incidence rate since the fortnight of December 30 to January 12. .
The two territories that top the list of municipalities with the highest incidence rate in the country are the same, but they have changed their position. The municipality of Penedono (Viseu), now with 5,789 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, changed positions with Castelo de Vide (Portalegre), which registered 6,680.
Despite the very high incidence, the Penedono led one of the biggest falls of the week, registering 1698 new cases less than in the previous update, when it rose to the top of the indicator due to the greater national increase. This is because the municipality has less than three thousand inhabitants, so variations in a few dozen cases can cause very important fluctuations in the incidence rate. The indicator of new cases per one hundred thousand inhabitants in 14 days is the method used by the DGS to compare municipalities with different population realities.
In the list of municipalities with the highest incidence, Castelo de Vide and Penedono are followed by Aguiar da Beira (Guarda), which maintains the third position, with 4,751 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, São João da Pesqueira (Viseu) with 3607, Almeida (Guarda) with 4254, Sernancelhe (Viseu) with 3873, Fronteira (Portalegre) with 3766, Rio Maior (Santarém) with 3504, Tábua (Coimbra) with 3352 and Boticas (Vila Real ) with 3081.
Of these territories, three registered the largest increases at the national level: Fronteira had the largest increase of the week, with an increase in incidence of 3,253; São João da Pesqueira had an increase of 1123, coming in fourth place with the same variation as Monchique (Madeira) and behind Vila de Rei and Sabugal (plus 1474 and 1219, respectively); and Rio Maior, which went from 2,611 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants between January 13 and 26 to 3504 in the last update (plus 893) had the eighth largest increase.
In the list of antipodes, the municipality of Góis (Coimbra) had the greatest decrease, from 3,758 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 1708 (minus 2050), followed by Sernancelhe (minus 1928), Penalva do Castelo (minus 1884), Penedono and Aguiar da Beira (minus 1612).
