COVID-19. São João Hospital is reaching the limit of response capacity

The reporter Nuno Amaral toured the corridors of the São João service, a unit where users are treated with the new coronavirus.

Approaching the red line, the São João Hospital in Porto entered level three of the contingency plan two weeks ago. The dilemma is to care for and treat covid and non-covid patients without delay.

This Monday, São João had 95 people infected by the new coronavirus hospitalized, 25 in intensive care.

Experts and nurses say they are calmer, more prepared, after the first wave of the pandemic. Artificial ventilation is now a feature that is used only in extreme cases.

The hospital prepared for this second wave, adapted some services, expanded others. The internal geography adapts to the demand, but there is a limit, that red line that collides with the lack of human resources.

Reporter Nuno Amaral visited the intensive care unit and heard doctors and nurses call for more professionals and a warning: hospitals are only trying to treat the pandemic. Everyone is fighting the new virus on a daily basis.
