It is the highest number of new cases since the pandemic began in March. Only the Northern Health Region registers 1,001 new confirmed cases and three deaths. Lisbon and the Tagus Valley add 802 cases and four deaths.

The highest values ​​since the start of the pandemic had been reached on April 10, with the notification of 1,516 new infections, a figure that was exceeded on October 10, when 1,646 cases were reached.

Today, DGS data shows the notification of 2,072 new cases in the last 24 hours, a record number and the record of seven deaths, as well as a continuous increase in the number of hospitalizations, which amounted to 957 (more than 41) and 135 in intensive care (three more). Since the start of the pandemic, Portugal has already registered 2,117 deaths and 91,193 contagion cases, with 34,583 active cases, 1,619 more than on Tuesday.

The number of people recovered also increased to 54,493. In the past 24 hours, only 446 were reported to have recovered from covid-19.

These data are contained in the epidemiological bulletin released this Wednesday afternoon by the Directorate General of Health (DGS) and refer to the figures found up to midnight.

Faced with the worsening of the pandemic, the Prime Minister announced this Wednesday, at the end of the Council of Ministers, that the country goes from a contingency situation to a state of calamity.

The announcement adds eight decisions, including a ban on gatherings of more than five people on public roads, commerce and restaurants and the recommendation to wear a mask on public roads, which may become mandatory.

When questioned by journalists, the president replied that he was “careful to inform the President of the Republic in advance about the set of measures approved today by the Council of Ministers.”

“What we focused on were not the measures that interrupt the activities, but the individual behavior of each one. For now, the call and recommendation we make to everyone is that everyone wear a mask even on public roads and that everyone download the application and use it effectively, ”he insisted.

North leads the number of new cases

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 802 new cases of infection were reported, representing 44,788 cases and 850 deaths.

Today, the North region has more than 1001 new cases of covid-19, totaling 34,661 cases and 932 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the Central region, 172 more cases were registered, representing 7,348 infections and 273 deaths.

In Alentejo, 47 new cases of covid-19 were registered, for a total of 1,724, with a total of 26 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The Algarve region today reported 42 new cases of infection, with a total of 2,067 cases and 21 deaths.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, five new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, with a total of 305 infections detected and 15 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Madeira registered three new cases in the last 24 hours, representing 300 infections, with no deaths to date.

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years. The age group of 40 and 49 years is the one with the highest value.

Regarding the total number of fatalities, 1,061 were men and 1,056 women.

The highest number of deaths is still concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

In Portugal, 2,110 people died from 89,121 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the Americas are now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
