According to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health (DGS), Portugal has 310 fewer patients hospitalized with covid-19 in hospitals and 30 fewer in intensive care units (ICU). The number of ICU patients has been declining for 11 days since February 13, and the total number of hospitalized patients has also been declining almost consecutively in the last two weeks. Between the beginning of the month and this Monday, the total number of hospitalized patients decreased by approximately 55.5%, from 6775 (February 1) to 3012 (this month 22).
During the meeting of specialists that took place this Monday at Infarmed, Baltazar Nunes, from the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA), explained that, regarding the occupation in intensive care units by patients with covid-19, it is “In a phase of reduction in the number of beds, but still with very high values”. The data from the DGS report indicate that, of the total registered deaths, 8,405 are men and 7681 women. Of the 16,086 people who died to date from COVID-19 in Portugal, 10,683 were over 80 years old, which corresponds to 66.4%.
Lisbon and Tagus Valley with 47% of new cases
Most of the new cases were registered in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (493 new infections, corresponding to 47.7%) and in the northern region (186 cases, corresponding to 18%).

The day before, Portugal registered 61 more deaths from covid-19 and 549 more cases of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the lowest number since October 6. It should be noted that the number of new cases tends to be lower in the days after weekends, due to fewer tests being performed.
