Covid-19: Portugal registers 70 more deaths and 4,378 new cases of infection

In the last 24 hours in Portugal, another 70 deaths and 4,378 new cases of covid-19 infection were registered, according to the latest bulletin from the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

The country now has a total of 387,636 confirmed cases and 6,413 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Most of the deaths occurred in the North, with 28, followed by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo with 24, Centro with 13, four in Alentejo and one in Madeira. Algarve and Azores have not registered fatalities in the last 24 hours.

Regarding hospitalizations, 137 fewer patients were registered in the ward and six fewer in the Intensive Care Unit.

Portugal now has 68,690 active cases, 221 more than on Wednesday, and 4,087 more have been recovered in the last 24 hours, for a total of 312,533 since the start of the pandemic.

The DGS also states that the health authorities have 88,978 contacts under surveillance, plus 1,935.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, 17 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, while in Madeira 34 more cases were registered.

According to the DGS bulletin, the North region was also the one that recorded the highest number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections in the last 24 hours (1,952).

Since the start of the pandemic, the northern region has registered 199,720 cases of infection and 3,001 deaths.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 1,271 new infections have been reported, with 124,812 cases and 2,220 deaths so far.

In the Central region, 810 more cases were registered, accumulating 43,272 infections and 916 deaths.

In Alentejo, another 200 cases have been reported, for a total of 9,927 infections and 180 deaths since the epidemic began in Portugal.

The Algarve region today reported 94 new cases, for a total of 6,906 infections and 64 deaths.

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 174,158 men and 213,340 women in Portugal, according to DGS data, according to which there are 138 cases of unknown sex, which are under investigation, as these data are not provided automatically.

Of the total deaths, 3,332 were men and 3,081 women.

The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years of age, followed by people between 70 and 79 years of age.

The state of emergency in Portugal promulgated on November 9 to combat the pandemic was renewed until January 7, with mandatory curfews in municipalities with the highest risk of contagion.
