This Wednesday’s newsletter from the General Directorate of Health (DGS) registers 59 deaths and 7,497 new cases of covid-19 in Portugal. In addition, there are 2357 recovered. According to the DGS daily bulletin, the number of new infected people is inflated, because it includes “the sum of 3,570 cases, product of the delay in the laboratory report, mainly from a laboratory in the North, since 10/30/2020” .

Without these cases, the number of newly infected people would be 3,927, which would remain the fifth worst day of the pandemic.

In total, there are now 156,940 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, 2,694 dead and 2,357 recovered.

As mentioned above, the death toll is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic: 59 people, 33 men and 26 women. Of these, there is one fatality in the age group 40-49, two 50, and five 60-69. The remaining 51 were over 70 years old. The COVID-19 fatality rate decreased slightly, from 1.76% to 1.72%.

The good news about the number of cured yesterday, which had been more than 3,000, was not repeated. Still, there are 2357 more people who have recovered from covid-19 in Portugal. In total, there are already 88,946, more than half of the total infected (57%).

Crossing this number of recoveries with that of deceased, we obtain a new increase in active cases, contrary to what happened on Tuesday. The difference of more than 5,081 brings to 65,300 the total number of people with the virus active in the body at this time in Portugal. It is a growth rate of 2.24%.

The North has the highest daily number of infected people in a region of the country since the beginning of the pandemic (5183). Without these additional cases, the value would be 1613, almost identical to Sunday (1616) and slightly higher than Tuesday (1547).

The other cases are distributed by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (1,560), Centro (518), Alentejo (120), Algarve (81), Madeira (26) and Azores (9).
