“The international community has failed. It failed to discover the pandemic too late. It failed to change its position on the pandemic several times. It failed when the great powers of the world decided to act alone.”said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the inauguration of the La Toja Forum, which will run until Saturday on the island of La Toja, Pontevedra, in Galicia, Spain.

The President of the Republic regretted that the great powers of the world decided to act alone and with “selfishness”, faced with a common problem.

The Head of State adds that citizens would not tolerate sector wars when they go through a pandemic.

“In such a complex period it is essential that the European Union is itself a power. That it be a political and strategic power, as well as a commercial one,” he said.

“That it is united and is quick to decide how quickly it was to decide in the European Council in which it defined a health horizon, a horizon of economic and social crisis, emergency measures and medium and long-term plans,” he said.

“The pandemic may last another six months, or less or more, we do not know. But the economic and social crisis will last for years. And the years require European plans and national plans in the medium and long term.”, he is stressed.

The president insisted on remembering that pandemics do not know electoral cycles.
