Covid-19 in Portugal: the number of patients hospitalized in intensive care reaches a new peak | Coronavirus

Portugal registered 67 more deaths from covid-19 and 5,444 cases of infection, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the General Health Directorate (DGS) released on Friday (but referring to the whole day of Thursday). In total, the country has 4,276 deaths and 285,838 infections.


3208 people are hospitalized (16 more than the day before), of which 526 are in intensive care units (10 more). The number of hospitalized patients is on the rise again, after two consecutive days of decline, while the number of patients in intensive care represents a new high since the start of the pandemic. The day before, this value had decreased for the first time, after 13 days of increase.


The total number of people who recovered increased to 199,446 (plus 5,502). There are 82,116 active cases (minus 125), a number that results from the subtraction of those recovered and deaths from the total number of infections.


Of the new cases, 3,161 (58.1%) were identified in the North, where 39 people died on the last day. In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, there were 1,380 new cases (25.4%) and 15 deaths occurred. Eight people died in the Center, three in the Algarve and two in the Alentejo.


The overall mortality rate in Portugal is 1.5%. Around 87.6% of the people who died from COVID-19 in the country were over 70 years old: 3,745. In these age groups, nine men and six women between 70 and 79 years old and 19 men women died on the last day over 80 years old. In the 50 to 59 age group, two people died (a man and a woman); and, between the ages of 60 and 69, four people (three men and one woman) died.


The North has the highest number of infection cases: 149,704. They are followed by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (95,392), Centro (28,050, plus 631), Alentejo (5799, plus 136) and the Algarve (5126, plus 90). The Azores registered 914 infections (more than 35) and Madeira 853 (more than 11).


The highest number of deaths from covid-19 occurred in the North: 2024. Then there are Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (1533), Centro (545), Alentejo (108), Algarve (47), Azores (17) and Madeira (two ).
