This Saturday, Portugal had the worst day in its history in terms of new cases of covid-19, something that had already happened on Thursday, when the country exceeded, for the first time, the threshold of 3,000 daily cases. Still, this Saturday’s numbers have worsened compared to the last two days, at least when it comes to new infections and the number of people hospitalized.

In the last 24 hours, 3,669 new cases were confirmed, out of a total of 116,109 since the start of the pandemic. Almost all of the highest values ​​of daily cases were registered this month, which, still unfinished, already has more infections than, for example, the month of April. On October 14, Portugal surpassed 2,000 cases a day, but Marta Temido already warned, at a press conference, that the number 3,000 could arrive the following week, which in reality happened.


As had already happened this Friday, the number of hospitalizations for covid-19 registered a new maximum in Portugal: 1,455 people are hospitalized, 37 more than on Friday, 221 of whom are in intensive care units (more 23).

According to the latest update from the General Directorate of Health (DGS), unlike the last two indicators, the number of deaths was not so high when compared to this Friday, when 31 people died, the highest number since April. This Saturday there were 21 deaths, for a total of 2,297 since the start of the pandemic.

Saturday’s bulletin reports an increase in the number of active cases, an indicator that has been growing since mid-August and that had its first decline last Tuesday, with 71 fewer active cases. However, the next day, this indicator rose again and reached the highest value in history this Saturday, so there are 1,686 more active cases, in a total of 45,970.

On the other hand, the number of cases recovered is also significant: there are 1,962 more cases recovered since this Friday, totaling 67,842. At least 57,024 people continue to be monitored by health authorities, 431 fewer from the previous day.


North with 60% of new cases

Most of the new cases (2212 or 60.2%) were registered in the north and around 27% in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (1027 new cases). The increase in infections in the North region in recent weeks has already led the Government to take measures, passing a resolution that came into force on Thursday and imposes the duty to stay at home in three municipalities of the country where the pandemic is growing the most: Felgueiras , Lousada and Paços de Ferreira.

Looking at the distribution of cases by region, Lisbon and Tej Valleyor is still the country with the highest cumulative number of cases in the country. In total, there are 52,340 infection records and 919 deaths from covid-19 (six as of Friday).

THE North It has 48,603 cases and 1,012 deaths, it is the region with the highest number of deaths, 11 of which occurred in the last 24 hours. the Center It has 9661 infections (273 in the last 24 hours) and 291 deaths (one since Friday). THE Alentejo totals 2368 cases (96 new) and 35 deaths (two in the last 24 hours). In the Algarve there are 2747 cases of infection (54 in the last 24 hours) and 25 deaths (plus one). THE Madeira registered 372 cases of infection (three new) and zero deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. the Azores registered 338 cases (four more) and 15 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Data from the DGS report indicate that, of the total registered deaths, 1,129 are women and 1,168 men – and in terms of infections, 52,857 are men and 63,252 women, with 21 deaths registered in the last 24 hours referring to 13 people older than 80 years old, one between 70 and 79 years old, four people between 60 and 69 years old and three between 50 and 59 years old. The disease caused by the new coronavirus is more deadly in the age group over 70 years: Covid-9 killed 1989 people of this age, which represents 86.5% of all deaths registered in all groups old.
