Covid-19 in Portugal: 12 more deaths and 963 new cases

This Saturday Portugal counts 12 more deaths related to covid-19 and 963 new cases of infection by the new coronavirus, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS). This is the highest number since March 31, when 1,035 cases were recorded, and is the third highest since the start of the pandemic.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Portugal has registered 1,995 deaths and 78,247 cases of infection, with 26,407 active cases, more than 465 than on Friday.

The DGS indicates that of the 12 registered deaths, six occurred in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, where there is also the highest number of infections, three in the North region, two in the Center region and one in Alentejo.

Regarding hospital admissions, the bulletin reveals that in the last 24 hours there are less 14 patients hospitalized in wards and fewer in intensive care compared to Friday.

In total, there are 668 patients hospitalized in nursing and 106 in intensive care units, according to the report on the epidemiological situation of covid-19 in Portugal.

The bulletin also indicates that the health authorities have under surveillance 46,228 contacts, another 615 in relation to Friday, and that 486 patients were reported as recovered.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal, 49,845 people have recovered from the disease.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 440 new cases of infection were reported, and the region accounted for 39,928 cases and 781 deaths.

The northern region today registers 362 additional new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with a total of 28,094 and 891 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the Central region there were 60 more cases, which represented 6,354 cases and 265 deaths.

In Alentejo, 43 new cases of covid-19 were registered, for a total of 1,555 and 24 deaths.

The Algarve region today reported 49 more cases of infection, totaling 1,792 cases and keeping the 19 dead.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, two new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, totaling 282 infections and 15 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Madeira has registered seven more cases in the last 24 hours, representing 242 infections, with no deaths to date.

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years. The age group of 40 and 49 years is the highest value.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 35,487 men and 42,760 women in Portugal, according to reported cases.

Of the total deaths, 1,000 were men and 995 women.

The highest number of deaths is still concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than a million deaths and more than 34.6 million cases of contagion worldwide, according to a report prepared by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
