The number of health professionals infected in the COVID-19 outbreak identified in the operating room of the Beja hospital has increased from 34 to 35, according to the Local Health Unit of Baixo Alentejo (ULSBA).

Among the 35 confirmed infected, there are 15 nurses, nine doctors, seven operating assistants, two technical assistants and two diagnostic and therapeutic technicians, and all have “only mild symptoms” and are isolated at home, says ULSBA, who manages the Hospital of Beja.

The entity reports that there are 57 health professionals in the hospital who are under active surveillance with prophylactic isolation for 14 days.

It is made up of 31 nurses, 13 doctors, eight operational assistants, four senior diagnostic and therapeutic technicians, and a technical assistant.

Due to the outbreak, which was identified on September 24, ULSBA reinforced safety and hygiene measures, extended the screening to professionals and decided to carry out COVID-19 screening tests to all hospital personnel, which should end at the end of this week.

Since the outbreak was identified, when the first six infected nurses were detected in the operating room, and to date, nearly 1,000 tests have been performed on professionals at the Beja hospital, the organization says.

As an “additional measure”, last Tuesday, a specialized company carried out a new disinfection of the operating room, using hydrogen peroxide vaporization and ultraviolet radiation.

According to ULSBA, in the hospital, with the exception of the operating room, where there is only emergency surgical activity, and the Gynecology and Obstetrics Emergency Service, which remains closed until 8:00 am next Wednesday 7, consultations. the specialty and other medical and nursing acts and examinations are “normal.”

ULSBA states that users must go to the Beja hospital “with complete confidence, but respecting and following the instructions given”.

These are indications related to physical distance, hand hygiene, compliance with the appointment or examination schedule and, “very important”, the mandatory use of a mask within the buildings of the Beja hospital.

The situation of the outbreak “is being monitored and evaluated” by the Public Health Unit, the Occupational Health Service and the Local Coordinating Group for the Infection Prevention and Control Program and Antimicrobial Resistance and under the contingency plan within the framework of the ULSBA COVID-19 pandemic.
