The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday, electronically, the resolution that will maintain beyond May 14 the closure of land borders with Spain.

“The Council of Ministers today approved the resolution extending the temporary and temporary restoration of border control in the context of the pandemic covid-19 disease,” said the statement issued at the end of the extraordinary government meeting.

This resolution takes effect at 00:00 on May 14, Thursday.

The indication that the control of people at the borders would continue beyond May 14, had already been given by the Minister of Internal Administration, Eduardo Cabrita, during a hearing in the parliamentary committee on Constitutional Affairs. At that time, the minister did not propose a date for the reopening, since he said that “it depends on the success” of Portugal and Spain in the fight against covid-19.

The control of the land borders with Spain is carried out from 23:00 on March 16 at nine authorized crossing points due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The operational border points are Valença-Tuy, Vila Verde da Raia-Verín, Quintanilha-San Vitero, Vilar Formoso-Fuentes de Oñoro, Termas de Monfortinho-Cilleros, Marvão-Valencia de Alcântara, Caia-Badajoz, Vila Verde de Ficalho -Rosal de la Frontera and Castro Marim-Ayamonte.

Within the scope of border control, tourist and leisure travel between the two countries is avoided, and only the transport of goods and cross-border workers is allowed.

Globally, the covid-19 pandemic It has caused more than 289,000 deaths and infected more than 4.2 million people in 195 countries and territories. More than 1.4 million patients were considered cured.

In Portugal, 1163 people died, of whom 27,913 were confirmed to be infected, and there are 3,013 recovered cases, according to the General Directorate of Health. Portugal entered a calamity situation on May 3 due to the pandemic, after three consecutive periods in the state of emergency since March 19.
