Covid-19. Flame antibodies help “kill” the new coronavirus

CThe report advances the magazine Galileo, the University of Brussels, Belgium, in 1989, led a study that identified the properties of antibodies against camelids, family of mammals comprising calls, camels, alpacas and other animals.

Later, and over the years, these immune system proteins were used in experiments to combat HIV and pathologies caused by different strains of coronavirus, like Sars (Severe acute respiratory syndrome) and Mers (Middle East respiratory syndrome).

And now before pandemic from Covid-19, scientists decided to test these antibodies against SarscoV-2 (virus considered ‘cousin’ of Sars and the Mers) According to researchers from the Flanders Institute of Biotechnology (VIB) in Belgium, antibodies present in calls contribute to extinguish the new coronavirus.

The study was carried out by teachers and researchers Xavier Saelens and Bert Schepens, of the VIB; Jason McLellan, from the University of Texas at Austin, USES; and Stefan Pöhlmann, from the Leibniz Institute, in Germany. Having been published in the bioRxiv, scientists analyzed the reaction of two variants of antibodies against calls exposed to the virus Sars (SarsCoV) and Mers (MersCoV)

Galileo points out that one of these antibodies managed to neutralize the MersCoV and the other removed the SarsCoV. However, and later, a hybrid antibody was created by fusing this second antibody of call with a human antibody and thus it was possible to neutralize the SarsCoV-2, causing Covid-19.

“The data suggests that these antibodies may be useful in fighting epidemics of coronavirus“he stated in an interview with the scientific journal Nature.

“This antibody can mean protection immune system for a patient or potentially exposed person, “says Xavier Saelens, in an interview with the station Euronews, adding that the development of a safe and effective antiviral could take around 12 months.
