The bodies of patients who died from covid-19 remain for several hours in the rooms of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central, an attack on the dignity of patients and their families, denounces the Union of Doctors of the South Zone, which asks the Government for answers.

Serious irregularities in the handling of the corpses of deceased COVID-19 patients at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central (CHULC) threaten the dignity of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and their families. In addition to the poor working conditions that have been widely reported, this situation also shows the lack of competence of the Board of Directors of the CHULC (CA) to ensure a response to the pandemic in all its aspects “, denounces the Union of Doctors of the South Zone (SMZS), in a statement released this Sunday.

The union accuses the CA of the hospital center of not adequately preparing the second wave of the pandemic, which culminated in the “Inhumane treatment of its users, in addition to disregard for the working conditions of doctors and health professionals”, a situation that the union believes it deserves “The greatest attention – and a prompt response – by the Ministry of Health, which has ignored the situation”.

According to the union structure, “There has been a frequent delay in the collection of the corpse, far beyond what is tolerable” me “It is not uncommon for corpses to remain long hours in the room where they died, often alongside hospitalized patients.”, adding knowledge that it is not a recent situation, which is known to the Board of Directors, and aggravated by the “Suspension of the collection of bodies during the night”.

This situation constitutes an unacceptable violation of good practice in the event of death. It translates into an incomprehensible significant disturbance for patients who remain hospitalized with a corpse in the bedroom and a very serious total lack of dignity in the handling of the bodies of deceased patients, showing an inhuman attitude towards patients and their families., criticized the union.

He also adds that to the overload that is beginning to be felt in hospitals due to the festivities is added the lack of beds for internment caused by the delay in the release of beds occupied by corpses, leaving users in the emergency room for a “Excessive time”.

The SMZS has been denouncing a series of bad practices on the part of the CHULC Board, which has maintained covid-19 and not covid-19 assistance dependent on the use of overtime by doctors, without guaranteeing respect for compensatory rest to hire human resources appropriate to the situation “the statement said.

Speaking to Lusa, SMZS leader and neurologist João Marques Proença said that the bodies can remain unpaid at the Curry Cabral Hospital until 12 at night, a “unsustainable situation” progressive “four or five days ago”, the period the union took to “consult and collect information” with the doctors to substantiate the complaint presented.

João Marques Proença also said that the union did not communicate with the CHLC board on this matter because it anticipated that it would not get a response.

CHLC includes Hospital de São José, Hospital Curry Cabral, Hospital Dona Estefânia, Hospital Santa Marta, Hospital Santo António dos Capuchos and Maternidade Alfredo da Costa.

Portugal represents at least 7,118 dead associated with covid-19 in 427,254 confirmed cases, according to the latest bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS).
