The Basic School 2/3 of Penedono, in Viseu, with about 200 students, will not open on Monday, after one of the three cooks in the dining room tested positive for covid-19.

This case, known on Friday, dictates the first closure of a school this school year due to covid-19.

The director of the municipality’s School Group, Romeu Santos, who lives in Sernancelhe, where he is a Provider for Santa Casa da Misericórdia, has also been infected since the beginning of this month, staying at home to recover.

The elements of the school management, teachers and other collaborators carried out the test, with a negative result for all, except the referred cook, who does not have direct contact with the students.

“What we know is that the school will be closed on Monday for disinfection, but on Tuesday we must go back to work,” said a teacher at the school, Luís Figueiredo.

“Without a dining room, the school doesn’t work,” says the teacher. The building next door, which houses the elementary and preschool students, will also be closed, since the meals come from the same cafeteria.

Carlos Esteves, mayor of Penedono, highlights that this is the first case of covid-19 in a resident of the municipality. “I was informed, following the tests ordered by the ACES Douro Sul Health Authority, to the operating assistants and technical assistants of the EB 2.3 School of the School Group of our municipality, and one of the tests gave a positive result,” reads a statement published on the municipality’s Facebook. In the document, the mayor regrets not having been informed by the health authorities.
