Covid-19 cases drop to 6,489 and deaths drop to 61, but hospitalizations return to record – Coronavirus

The number of people infected with covid-19 in Portugal increased by 6489, for a total of 249,498, according to the data revealed this Friday, November 20 by the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

Regarding deaths related to the new coronavirus, increased by 61 in the last 24 hours, increasing the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 3,762.

The death toll fell for the fourth day in a row after reaching a daily high on November 16 (91). Still, the seven-day average is 73 deaths.

The number of cases also decreased compared to the record of nearly 7,000 cases announced yesterday. The daily average of new cases for the last seven days has dropped to 5,780, slightly below yesterday’s record of 5,783.

In the last 14 days, Portugal accumulated 760 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This indicator, widely used internationally to measure the spread of the virus and a criterion determined by the Government to consider municipalities at risk, reached a new record and far exceeds the defined limit of 240 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The number of recovered patients increased by 5,076, for a total of 163,000, While active cases, which is calculated by subtracting recovered patients and deaths from the total number of confirmed cases, increased by 1,352. Active cases are now 82,726.

Hospitalizations are back on the record

The number of hospitalized for covid-19 increased by 62 to a total of 3,079 patients, more than canceling yesterday’s fall, the day on which the largest daily reduction since June 2 was recorded.

The number of hospitalized patients thus reached a new record, this being one of the indicators that most worries the authorities since it shows the high pressure on the National Health Service.

As for the most serious cases, hospitalizations in intensive care units, now there are 481, which represents a new record and a 23 increase from yesterday.

Cases are down in the north and up in LVT

As has been the case, most of the new reported cases are located in the North region, which adds to more 3,630 new cases56% of infections in the country in the last 24 hours, bringing the total for the region to 128,202.

Lisbon and the Tagus Valley now have 86,605 cases, 1,805 more than yesterday, which means that it was responsible for 28% of new infections.

Even so, in LVT there was an increase in cases, while in the North they fell compared to what was reported yesterday. Of the remaining new cases, 799 were in the Center, 135 in the Alentejo, 90 in the Algarve, 29 in the Azores and 1 in Madeira.

Regarding deaths, the majority were in the North, with 33. They are followed by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, with 15, the Center, with 12 and the Algarve with 1. In Alentejo, Madeira and the Azores there are no new fatalities to cry.
