The new coronavirus can remain active for up to 28 days, and capable of transmission, on surfaces such as banknotes, mobile phone screens or steel, reveals a new study by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO).

According to the research, the cornavirus responsible for causing Covid-19 stays longer on these surfaces at low temperatures.

“Our results show that SARS-CoV-2 can remain infectious on surfaces for long periods of time, so it is important to reinforce the need for good hygiene practices and measures, such as washing hands regularly and cleaning all surfaces.” explains Mr Ebbue Eagles, Director of the Australian Center for Disease Response.

“At 20º, room temperature, we find that the virus is extremely robust, surviving up to 28 days on smooth surfaces, such as glasses on mobile phone screens and other devices, or on the plastic parts of some banknotes,” says the researcher, who compares from the new coronavirus to the common flu virus, which remains on these surfaces for up to 17 days. So it turns out that it is very resistant ”, explains the expert.

As reported by the Daily Mail Australia, the person in charge also clarifies that “when temperatures exceed 30º, it was verified that the active life of the virus is significantly reduced”.
