Covid-19: 3,384 more infected and 73 dead in the last 24 hours

Today Portugal adds 73 more deaths from covid-19 and 3,384 new cases of infection by the new coronavirus, according to the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

The epidemiological bulletin of the DGS also indicates that 3,044 people are hospitalized, 186 more than on Saturday, of which 500 are in intensive care (+8).

Since the start of the pandemic, Portugal has registered 7,118 deaths and 427,254 cases of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with 77,601 active today, 926 more than on Saturday.

The health authorities have 94,394 contacts under surveillance, 2,502 more than the previous day.

The bulletin also reveals that another 2,385 people have been reported recovering.

Since the start of the epidemic in Portugal in March, 342,535 people have recovered.

Regarding the deaths registered in the last 24 hours, 17 occurred in the North, 10 in the Center region, 36 in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 9 in Alentejo and one in the Algarve.

Also according to the DGS bulletin, the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region registered the highest number of new infections in the last 24 hours (1,232).

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the region has added 138,520 cases of infection and 2,479 deaths.

In the northern region, 1,218 new infections have been reported, representing 215,031 cases and 3,261 deaths so far.

The Central region registers 605 additional cases, accumulating 50,247 infections and 1,030 deaths.

In Alentejo, another 155 cases were reported, for a total of 11,683 infections and 239 deaths.

The Algarve region has reported 133 new cases today, with a total of 8,148 infections and 73 deaths.

Madeira registered 25 new cases. This autonomous community has 1,696 infections and 14 deaths from covid-19.

In the Azores, 16 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, for a total of 1,929 infections and 22 deaths.

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 192,058 men and 235,048 women in Portugal, according to DGS data, according to which there are 148 cases of unknown sex, which are under investigation, since these data are not provided automatically.

Of the total deaths, 3,709 were men and 3,409 women.

The highest number of deaths is still concentrated in the elderly over 80 years of age, followed by people between 70 and 79 years of age.

Portugal began on December 27 the first phase of vaccination against covid-19, with the first batch of 9,750 doses of the vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech to be distributed by health professionals.

The state of emergency, enacted on November 9, was renewed until January 7, with a mandatory curfew in counties with the highest risk of contagion.
