The PSP agent João Nunes, sentenced to four years in prison (suspended for the same period) in the process in which 17 police officers from the Alfragide brigade were tried for assault, torture and kidnapping against six young people from Cova da Moura, calls the victims “tramps, who do nothing but sell drugs and play with guns” me “bandits with record“.
However, the post was removed after the DN confronted the PSP with it. In fact, João Nunes deleted all the posts he had made since last September. The DN kept, however, a copy of the text and a video of the Send.
This agent was convicted of crimes against qualified physical integrity and a crime of aggravated falsification of documents, a sentence confirmed this Wednesday by the Lisbon Court of Appeals (TRL), as well as the sentences of the other seven convicted policemen. .
As proven in court, João Nunes shot from shotgun against two women from the Cova da Moura neighborhood and, at point-blank range, against Celso Lopes, one of the six young men attacked at the Alfragide police station. Celso Lopes had permanent injuries to one of his legs.
“We are like a castle built on rotten wood, the judicial system and all its interests are that wood. Disgusting.”
In the publication of his Facebook page – whose authenticity was confirmed to DN by other agents – a few hours after the TRL’s decision was known, this official shared his opinion about the judicial system: “We are like a castle built on Wood rotten, the judicial system and all its interests are that wood. Disgusting. “
João Nunes says that it is a “fact” to have been “convicted of doing his job, in accordance with all current legislation”.
He apologizes to his family “for always being professional and for now having to remove food from their mouths to give them burns [João Nunes terá de pagar uma indemnização às vítimas], who do nothing but sell drugs and play with guns in movies licensed by the police. (…) Sorry to my daughter for having to take food out of your mouth to give it to the bad guys “.
“I’m upset, but I’ll be a cop until my bones are eaten”
And he concludes at the end: “I am upset, but I will be a police officer until my bones are eaten,” signs João Nunes, PSP agent.
PSP management does not comment
The national board of PSP, questioned about this publication, as well as about the professional situation of agent João Nunes, does not reflect this opinion.
The official spokesperson confirms that “PSP is aware of said publication” but assures that it does not know “at this time who is, in fact, responsible”. Regardless of the authorship, the publication is alien to us, so we will not comment on the interpretation of the text ”, adds this official source.
However, a search on this page identified several comments from police officers of this agent, among which are a former PSP official from Amadora and a union leader from Amadora police that he legally supported the accused Alfragide squad officers and was Chega candidate. Even the PSP Coimbra District Command shared a photo of the agent, where a cat can be seen on top of a patrol car.
“You miss Kova a lot, please”; “I’ve been in these colonies for over 15 years, do I miss you ???? Shit all these indigenous people.”
Another “commentator” who identifies himself as a police officer, is a deputy chief who was stationed in Amadora and says the following in a João Nunes publication: “You miss Kova, dasse”; “I’ve been in these colonies for over 15 years, ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿????
The same spokesperson for the national leadership, whose head is Superintendent Manuel Magina da Silva, highlights that “in general we promote the monitoring of content relevant to public safety and the institutional values of the PSP, in order to safeguard the defense of credibility , prestige and trust owed to the institution, including the content published by police officers ”.
Conclude that “When content that may constitute disciplinary or criminal matter is verified, the PSP triggers the legally established procedures in accordance with each specific situation.”
No respect for the victims
Asked again this spokesperson about what concrete measures had been taken in this case, he did not reply.
Lúcia Gomes, defense attorney for the six youths, “deeply regrets” the policeman’s words. “Agent João Nunes was convicted of having fired a shotgun against Neuza and Jailza, two women who were in the street, for having shot Celso Lopes at point-blank range with the same shotgun, at a distance that can be fatal, and for having falsified documents. Five years later, with confirmed trial and conviction, João Nunes continues to say that he acted in accordance with the law. Without any respect for their victims or the community where they acted, destroying the victims and the entire community“, he says.
“With this TRL decision it is confirmed that the victims have always told the truth and these agents have lied”
The lawyer points out that “with this TRL decision it is confirmed that the victims have always told the truth and these agents, not only the convicted but the 17 who participated, lied about the victims and continue to lie. And this one in particular continues to wear the uniform from PSP. If this is not ashamed and the PSP is not urged to act, then something much more serious is happening in this institution. “.
Regarding the references that João Nunes makes to the compensation that the court forced him to pay to the six young victims of police violence, Lúcia Gomes points out that this decision was made because this agent “caused considerable physical damage to the victims, all of them they are workers who depend exclusively on the income from their work to live. Since, in the face of the aggression, this was never the fundamental issue for the victims. The issue has always been to achieve justice. “
The eight policemen were convicted in May 2019 of Aggravated kidnapping, crimes against qualified physical integrity, injuries, defamatory accusation and false testimony, in a lawsuit that arose from a historical accusation that also charged a total of 18 officials of the authority with racist motivation and the practice of torture against six young people from Cova da Moura (charges that the Public Ministry withdrew in sentence).
Among these six young people were Flávio Almada and Celso Lopes, both, at the time of the events, in February 2015, members and cultural mediators of the Moinho da Juventude Cultural Association, distinguished with the Human Rights award by the Assembly of the Republic and that develops an intense social support work in the neighborhood. Flávio Almada still maintains the functions.
Their testimonies in court were among the strongest of the entire trial.
It should be remembered that, as DN reported in the October 3 edition, the PSP will have a plan to combat racial discrimination by its agents, which even includes monitoring social networks.
The national inspector of the PSP, Pedro Clemente, also assured that There is a goal of recruiting more ethnic minority officers. to create greater diversity in this security force and thus be more responsive to these communities.
