António Costa took this position in statements to RTP, moments before entering the Teatro da Trindade, in Lisbon, after being questioned about the contempt observed in a demonstration of businessmen in Porto.

“It is evident that there are many people who are suffering a lot. People who will have to stay at home will suffer. And there are sectors such as hotels, restaurants, commerce, which will suffer particularly,” said the prime minister.

António Costa later stressed that this demonstration was “legitimate, but throwing bottles is never legitimate.”

“It is necessary for people to calm down. And let’s make this effort, because it is an effort for the good of all,” he said.

A group of businessmen from the restaurant, bar and commerce sectors today threw bottles at PSP agents and burned coffins during a demonstration on Avenida dos Aliados, in Porto.

This protest began around 4:00 p.m. and brought together more than a thousand businessmen who challenge the restrictive measures imposed by the Government to stop the covid-19 pandemic.

In addition to throwing bottles at elements of the security forces, the protesters placed coffins on fire, symbolizing the death of the sector, forcing police intervention.
