Rio de Janeiro – The Rio de Janeiro State Health Department is analyzing a protocol that aims to establish who will receive a bed in the state hospitals, if the units reach the maximum service capacity. The increase in the number of cases of covid-19 has overloaded public hospitals and, in particular, intensive care beds (ICU).

The Secretary of State for Health, Edmar Santos, believes that if the number of infections continues to grow, there will soon be no vacancies for all patients.

The protocol is being prepared in collaboration with the Regional Council of Medicine (Cremerj), the National Academy of Palliative Care, the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, the Society for Intensive Care and the Universidade Federal Fluminense, among other institutions.

According to the Department of Health, practices used in countries such as Spain and the United States are being considered. The idea is to avoid the greatest number of deaths.
