The Porto City Council determined today that commercial establishments must close until 11:00 p.m., and the decision was made based on the favorable opinions of the local health authority and security forces.

In a note on its official website, the municipality says that the order signed today by the mayor, the independent Rui Moreira, comes into effect from midnight on Tuesday 15.

The municipal measure comes after the return from the contingency situation to mainland Portugal, between Tuesday and September 30, which defined stricter rules for the metropolitan areas of Porto and Lisbon.

As the Government has given autonomy to the municipalities so that, at the local level, they define the closing hours of the establishments, the Porto Chamber decided to “set the closing hours of the covered establishments, in the territorial scope of the Municipality of Porto, until 11 pm “, except for expressly provided situations.

In the order published today, the mayor reiterates “the call to maintain a responsible civic behavior that the vast majority of the people of Porto have demonstrated in the adoption of individual prevention measures in a social context and the relevance they assume in preventing the transmission of infection“.

It should also be noted that, without prejudice to its reevaluation, if justified, the order remains in force until the end of the declaration of the contingency situation in the territory of the municipality of Porto.

Continental Portugal will enter a contingency situation due to the covid-19 pandemic as of Tuesday, limiting meetings to 10 people and with specific measures for the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto.

Among the measures decided in the Council of Ministers and announced on Thursday by Prime Minister António Costa, is the opening of commercial establishments only after 10 in the morning and until 11 at night.
