The Government relaxed measures to contain the covid-19 pandemic at Christmas, but imposed “maximum moderation” in the New Year, including the prohibition of movement between municipalities and a curfew at 11 p.m. on the eve of New Year.

The measures planned by the government at the beginning of the month for Christmas have not changed, but due to the evolution of the pandemic, the Prime Minister announced last week that for the New Year it would be necessary to adopt “maximum containment measures” throughout the territory. of mainland Portugal.

Also last week, the executive released the new list of risk levels, which divides the municipalities between the moderate, high, very high and extreme risk of contagion of covid-19, which came into effect at 00:00 with the new state of emergency.

According to the updated list of risk levels, there are 30 counties at extreme risk of contagion, five less than on December 2 and 79 at very high risk, one more than in early December.

The number of municipalities considered high risk remains unchanged, 92, while the moderate risk municipalities are now 77, four more than at the beginning of the month.

In Madeira and the Azores, the same rules do not apply as in mainland Portugal, but regional governments also decided to apply special measures during Christmas and New Years.

The new state of emergency came into effect at 00:00 and lasts until 11:59 p.m. on January 7.

– Restaurants can only open until 23:00 and bars must close until 00:00. The nightclubs are closed.

On December 30, restaurants may exceptionally close at 00:00 and, on December 31, restaurants and bars may exceptionally close at 01:00.

– Market nights parties are prohibited in the markets, although they may remain open on “holidays” during normal hours.

Casual street shops, i.e. Christmas stalls and pavilions, cannot sell alcoholic beverages and food can only be sold to go.

Agglomerations of more than five people are not allowed.

– The Christmas Market in Plaça Central on Avenida Arriaga and the Ethnographic Village in Largo da Restauração are open until January 10, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., ending on December 25 and January 1. The sale of beverages is prohibited and the sale of food is only allowed to go.

– The São Silvestre race is prohibited throughout the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

– The Masses of Parthus and Gallo must obey the regulations in force for religious celebrations, being “expressly forbidden to socialize around the temples, before or after the celebrations.

– The opening and holding of circuses and amusement parks is prohibited throughout the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

– The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages on public roads is prohibited, except on duly authorized terraces.

– Day centers, social centers and community centers are closed until January 2.

– The double test is compulsory for Madeira students abroad and “migrant residents”. The second PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 should be performed between the fifth and seventh day after the first. Between disembarkation and the second test, prophylactic isolation should be done at home.
