China has suspended all flights with the United Kingdom as a preventive measure, taking into account the recent discovery of a mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the European country, the Foreign Ministry spokesman announced today.

“China has taken note of the practices of other countries and has suspended flights between China and the United Kingdom,” Wang Wenbin said during the ministry’s daily press conference.

This measure, he said, was taken “taking into account the special situation and the possible impact of this variant of the new coronavirus, and in order to safeguard health and exchanges between the peoples of China and other countries.”

The spokesperson did not specify a deadline for the resumption of flights and said the ministry will monitor the situation and announce further adjustments when appropriate.

The Asian power thus follows the measures taken by other countries, such as Japan, Canada and South Korea.

This morning, China Southern, one of the largest airlines in the country, had already announced the suspension of its air links with the United Kingdom.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,718,209 deaths derived from more than 77.9 million cases of contagion worldwide, according to a report prepared by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
