China detects covid-19 in frozen meat from Brazil

A package of frozen meat imported from Brazil to China tested positive for covid-19, through an analysis carried out in Wuhan, the Health Commission of that Chinese city reported this Friday in a note to the local office in charge of control and prevention of diseases. -market.

The three samples of beef analyzed were part of a total of 27 tons of meat from Brazil and entered the customs of Qingdao, in northeast China. As soon as the result was known, the city “quickly adopted emergency measures”: the cargo was stored and the personnel who were in contact with the product were tested and isolated.

“All the frozen products involved were sealed and the environment was completely sterilized,” the local Health Commission said.

The meat, which was never sold, left the port of Santos and arrived in Wuhan on August 17. The local Health Commission advised people not to buy imported frozen food outside of retail chains and also to review the product’s test report before consuming it.

It is recalled that already in October the authorities reported the detection of the new coronavirus in the packaging of a batch of frozen pork in Yantai, Shandong province. Earlier in August, COVID-19 samples were also found on the surface of packages from Brazil carrying frozen chicken wings in Shenzhen, near Hong Kong.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil, China represents 40% of agricultural exports made in the first half of 2020, representing a record value of 20.5 billion dollars, that is, 17.3 billion euros.
